Being a Good Neighbour This Christmas: Simple Ways to Keep Our Communities Safe & Cheerful

08/12/2025

Its A Wonderful Life

As the festive season approaches, many of us look forward to time with loved ones, cosy evenings at home, and the sparkle of Christmas lights. But for some residents, this time of year can also bring worries—particularly around anti-social behaviour (ASB) such as loud parties, parking issues, or alcohol-related disputes.

A little consideration can make a big difference. By looking out for each other, we can help ensure the holidays are safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Seasonal ASB: What We Typically See and Why

Across December and early January, certain types of ASB tend to increase in neighbourhoods. Common issues include:

  • Noise nuisance—loud music, late-night gatherings, and parties.
  • Parking problems—blocked driveways or inconsiderate parking as more visitors arrive.
  • Alcohol-related disorder—arguments or aggressive behaviour spilling into shared spaces.
  • Youth-related ASB—loitering or intimidating behaviour during the school holidays (often unintentional, but still disruptive).

These patterns often rise due to:

  • More home gatherings and visitors.
  • Higher alcohol consumption, which can increase the risk of ASB.
  • Seasonal pressures, including financial strain, family tensions, and reduced access to some support services.

Local Action to Keep Neighbourhoods Safe

Over the festive period, police and local agencies increase their focus on tackling ASB. This year, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has launched Operation North Star, part of the UK Government’s Winter of Action initiative, running from 1 December 2025 to 31 January 2026.

The operation aims to reduce ASB and help residents feel safe throughout the Christmas and New Year period.

How to Be a Good Neighbour This Christmas

Whether you’re hosting, visiting, or simply enjoying some quiet time at home, these small steps can help everyone have a peaceful holiday:

If you’re hosting or celebrating:

  • Let neighbours know if you’re planning a party or expecting visitors—especially if you share walls. A quick heads-up prevents misunderstandings.
  • Keep noise to reasonable levels, particularly late at night. Closing windows and moving speakers away from shared walls can make a big difference.
  • Park considerately—don’t block driveways, pavements or access routes.
  • Drink responsibly—looking after yourself and your guests helps prevent avoidable disruption.

If you experience or witness ASB:

Report issues early so they don’t escalate.

  • Call 101 for non-emergencies
  • Call 999 if you feel threatened or in danger
  • Inform your housing provider or local council where appropriate

Keeping the Season Bright—Together

Everyone deserves a peaceful and joyful Christmas. By taking responsibility for our actions, being considerate to the people around us, and supporting local safety initiatives, we can prevent problems before they start.

Small gestures—a friendly hello, an early notice about a gathering, or simply turning the volume down—help create a more positive community for all.

If you need support or want to report concerns, please use the channels listed above.

Wishing all our residents a safe, happy, and restful Christmas.
