This Black History Month, we're celebrating the people whose passion, creativity and dedication are making a difference in communities across Manchester.
As part of this year's theme, 'Honouring Our Communities', we met Abigail Reid, founder and director of Rock Paper Write CIC, a Greater Manchester organisation helping children discover the joy of creative writing, outdoor learning and connecting with nature.
A former teacher, journalist and communications professional, Abigail has always had a passion for storytelling and education. Growing up, she developed a love of reading through her local library, while encouragement from her father helped her discover the power of expressing herself through writing.
After pursuing a career in journalism and communications, Abigail retrained as a teacher, inspired by a desire to make a difference in young people's lives.
Her experiences in the classroom, combined with a growing appreciation for the natural world, eventually led her to establish Rock Paper Write in 2023.

Inspiring young minds through nature and creativity
Rock Paper Write brings together creative writing and outdoor education, encouraging children to explore their surroundings, use their imaginations and develop confidence in expressing themselves.
Through Forest School sessions and nature-inspired writing workshops, Abigail helps young people discover that learning doesn't always have to happen behind a desk.
From exploring local parks and woodlands to experiencing the Lake District, her activities give children opportunities to connect with nature, develop new skills and find inspiration in the world around them.
The organisation places particular emphasis on reaching children in underserved communities, helping make creative and outdoor learning opportunities more accessible.
For Abigail, it's about much more than improving writing skills. By combining storytelling with outdoor experiences, she hopes to nurture children's curiosity, confidence, sense of belonging and care for the environment.
As a Black woman working in education and the environmental sector, Abigail is passionate about challenging barriers and creating opportunities for young people who might otherwise be overlooked.
Her journey reflects a belief in the importance of encouragement, representation and giving children the freedom to discover their own potential.
Through Rock Paper Write, Abigail is helping the next generation find their voices, explore their creativity and build a lasting connection with the natural world.
This Black History Month, we're proud to honour Abigail and her work in inspiring young people and creating opportunities across Greater Manchester.
