This Black History Month, we’re celebrating the people whose dedication, leadership and care are making a difference in communities across north Manchester.

As part of this year’s theme, ‘Honouring Our Communities’, we met Jumoke ‘Jay’ Quadri, founder and Chief Executive of Nurturing Foundations – a community charity based in Harpurhey that works to empower young people, families and communities.

Nurturing Foundations aims to tackle the barriers that can prevent people from reaching their potential, creating opportunities through education, mentoring, personal development, wellbeing and routes into employment. Its work is built around helping people develop skills and confidence, find new opportunities and have a greater voice within their communities.

Jay founded the organisation and has built a strong reputation as a community and peace leader. Alongside her work at Nurturing Foundations, she contributes to a number of boards and organisations, including as an advisory member of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO).

Under her leadership, Nurturing Foundations has developed programmes supporting confidence, leadership, identity and wellbeing, as well as creating opportunities for young people to develop the skills and experience they need for the future.

At the heart of the organisation is a belief that communities themselves should play a central role in creating solutions to the challenges they face – working alongside local people to create lasting change.

This Black History Month, we’re proud to honour Jay and her contribution to young people and communities across north Manchester.
