We’re delighted to launch our new People of Housing Services series with someone who embodies dedication, creativity and community spirit: Kwasi Asante.

Kwasi is well-known among residents for his warmth, reliability and genuine care for the block that he looks after. His presence has a positive impact every day — but what many people may not know is that Kwasi also leads an extraordinary life beyond his day-to-day caretaking.

A Music Career Spanning More Than 30 Years

Kwasi has been a musician for over three decades. He began as a percussionist, later moving into vocals, and today he is widely recognised for his work as an MC, performing most often alongside the acclaimed Manchester DJ Mr Scruff.

Together, they’ve been touring both nationally and internationally — but recently, their focus has been closer to home: supporting small, grassroots venues.

Kwasi explains that while big venues like the city’s arenas continue to grow, smaller spaces — the ones where young, emerging artists traditionally cut their teeth — are disappearing. Without them, the next generation of musicians has nowhere to start.

By performing in and promoting these venues, Kwasi and Mr Scruff are helping to keep that essential cultural ecosystem alive.

A Leader and Role Model in Ghana

Kwasi also holds a significant role in his paternal home town of Larteh, in Ghana’s Eastern Region.

Two years ago, he was enstooled as a traditional sub-chief. His full title is:

Nana Dompiahene 1st of Larteh Kubease, Kwasi Asante Asare.

In this role, he serves as an important link between the area’s elders (chiefs) and its youth, helping shape development, represent local voices and support community growth.

The Larteh Community Library: A Self-Funded Educational Project

Driven by his passion for helping young people succeed, Kwasi founded the Larteh Community Library, a recognised NGO dedicated to providing books, learning materials and educational opportunities for children and young people in Larteh.

Remarkably, much of the project so far has been funded by Kwasi himself — often through his music work.
